F100 - Jaguar XJS IFS Rack N Pinion Steering and Pump Install

 Project Disruptive is getting power steering. To bring you up to speed I am using a 350 SBC engine. First, I am using an Alan Grove power steering mount for a lower SBC with short water pump.

The Jaguar XJS IFS used a Saginaw style Power steering pump. Based on experts I have personally talked to - this pump is the same as the GM pumps we find on 70's-80's cars and trucks. 

With the Alan Grove power steering pump mounted I looked for a pump and lines.

The pump I used was one from a 1987 Chevrolet R10 (c10) Pickup

This one I purchased from OReilly. This has the press fit pulley and a metric "o" ring style port.

I opted for the matching power steering line from the same vehicle with plans on putting a flare 90 degree to match the rack.

I cut the left fitting off and went down to my hydraulic store and got a 90 degree flare fitting installed.




The pump required a press fit pulley. I opted for a Dorman matching press-fit pulley. Went to OReilly and rented the pulley installer and followed the directions on how far it needed installed.

Once this was all hooked up my rack leaked. Getting a rebuilt rack seems impossible during this pandemic. No one has one.  I called David @ Everyday XJ and he did not have one either. BTW see David @Everyday XJ if you need Jag parts or even a cross member if you decide to do this IFS swap on your truck or car.  I contacted Coventry West for the new rack.  The rack was 395.00 + $150.00 core + plus shipping back and forth. The rack arrived packed real nice and the rack was clean and like new condition in less than a week. They were super quick with the rebuild. Looks like I got new bushings as well. Or like our friends in the EU (bushes). Very excited about getting this installed.

Belts installed and working. Mounted the cooler to the front frame rail. Probably not the best idea running lines higher than the reservoir. It may have an air pocket that never goes away.  Same goes for the master cylinder, just not good.


 

March 3rd update:

The air bled out quickly with little effort.  Everything was working great with no switching. I had to use a rototiller green belt but it will probably out live me!
